Choosing Vinyl Planks

Currently Vinyl Planks are hot property in the flooring industry, and they come in a variety of different shapes and sizes.  The most important thing to look for, depending on the application, is the thickness of the wear layer and the polyurethane coating.

Benefits of Vinyl Plank Flooring

Everyone loves the look of hardwood floors. Timbre flooring warms up even the coldest areas, and creates a nice natural warm feeling. Unfortunately, hardwood floors can be very expensive. It can cost thousands of dollars to have hardwood floors installed even in a smaller home. The installation process itself requires a professional for quality results, adding to the overall cost of the flooring. Not to mention that in most installation of real strip timbre or parquet floors, you have quite a bit of dust to deal with after the installation, and you have the inconvenience of around 3 to 7 days that you will have minimum access to your areas.

If you want the look and feel of hardwood floors, but none of the hassles that go with them, vinyl plank flooring is the next best thing. Vinyl planks are available in many different patterns and styles including: stone, ceramic tile, river rock, checker plate, solid colours, flat texture, timber grain textured finish etc.  The timbre grain of vinyl plank flooring is currently one of the most popular choices, as it looks surprisingly like the real deal. Vinyl plank flooring has all of the design benefits of real hardwood floors, but it is more durable, easier to clean, easier to install and a fraction of the price.

Most vinyl planks come in strips, and depending on the manufacturer they are different lengths, widths and thickness. Like most plank or tiles, installation couldn’t be easier. All you have to do is make sure that you have a good flat subfloor, thoroughly clean your floor with a good sweeping, vacuuming and mopping. Allow the floor to dry completely before beginning.

Some DIY vinyl planks are pre-glued, so all you need to do is peel the backing off the adhesive and lay the vinyl down on the dry floor, this is called the peel and stick product. You can smooth it out either by hand or using a dust mop. Match each piece up to the next, and the final result is an inexpensive yet beautiful faux hardwood floor. In most cases you will need to glue your planks to the subfloor with the manufactures specified adhesive. By doing this you will have an engineered flooring system, and you will have all the benefits of the manufactures warranty

Vinyl plank flooring is a practical alternative that will allow you to spend money in other areas of a renovation.

Besides the cost comparison to real strip timbre flooring, one of the main benefits of vinyl planks is its durability. Unlike hardwood floors that can be very susceptible to scratches and stains, vinyl planks can stand up a large amount of traffic and abuse, and maintain its appearance. That’s why vinyl planks and vinyl in general is often used in commercial buildings where there is heavy traffic.

When you look at it like that, this makes vinyl plank flooring a perfect choice for a child’s room, a family room, a rumpus or pool room or a play room among other things. Vinyl planks are hard to damage, so  by accidental spills, children playing with toys and even pet stains are not going to have you living in fear. In the past, homeowners have been somewhat weary of tears and rips occurring in vinyl flooring. Modern technology, however, has gone a long way to prevent these problems, and you shouldn’t worry about that happening except for when something extreme takes place. Most of the cases I see vinyl flooring being damaged, it is underneath or near the fridge, caused by incorrect moving of the fridge.

Cleaning vinyl planks is much easier than cleaning hardwood floors. Vinyl flooring can be wet mopped, or steam mopped without fear of damaging the surface. Because the surface is impermeable, liquid will not seep into the floor and mold or mildew will not be a problem! However, you still need to be careful that you don’t flood the floor on a regular occurrence, remembering that the vinyl is glues down, and excessive water will in time create issues.

Vinyl planks are so durable and easy to clean; it is even a practical option for garages. Easy to clean floors are a must for homes with people with allergies. House mites, microbes and insects have nowhere to hide, and bacteria can be easily kept at bay.
